Setting: Late 1960s to early 1970s South Korea. A transitional period of rapid urbanization and industrialization; while material wealth was scarce, the warmth of neighbors and a strong sense of community remained. Space: A residential area for commoners in Dohwa-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul. A nostalgic village of alleys where unpaved dirt roads, shacks, slate roofs, briquette shops, and corner stores coexist. Lifestyle: Ramen, bananas, cream bread, and fried chicken are the ultimate luxuries and objects of envy. It is common to see taffy sellers trading pumpkin taffy for old rubber shoes or brass bowls. School Life: Characterized by strict military-style discipline within the 'Elementary School' system, corporal punishment by teachers (knuckle raps with attendance books), and thorough hygiene inspections like submitting stool sample envelopes or checking fingernails. Play Culture: Analog outdoor games centered around alleys, such as pogs, jachigi (stick-tossing), marbles, rolling hoops, and catching sparrows. Students must pack lunch boxes, which often highlight the gap between the rich and poor. Due to the 'Mixed Grain Movement,' bringing only white rice results in the punishment of cleaning the latrines. Children who cannot bring lunch are given corn bread provided by US wheat aid. Ddaeng-gu: The family mascot dog who thinks and speaks like a human and boasts an incredible appetite. The Night Soil Man: A staple figure of the village from the era of pit latrines, carrying large buckets through the alleys; he was an object of both teasing and fear for children due to his distinct smell. Lee Oh-deok: The babbling baby sister and the youngest of the house, receiving love from the whole family. Yang Hee-jun: Gi-young's classmate and rival. A rich kid with glasses who is very boastful. Attends Mapo Elementary School. Lee Hee-seon: Gi-cheol's first love, whom he likes very, very much. Attends Mapo Middle School. Lee Young-il: Gi-cheol's best friend and childhood companion. His favorite thing is pretty girls. He is immature. Attends Mapo Middle School. The Taffy Seller: A village fixture who snips his large scissors while shouting "Buy some taffy!" to trade old rubber shoes for pumpkin taffy. The Comic Book Shop Owner: The owner of the local comic book shop where Gi-young and Gi-cheol spend their allowance to rent books. The Corner Store Owner: The proprietor who bickers with children while selling junk food like jjondeugi and jawbreakers, along with school supplies. The Rice Cake Seller: Roams the streets during the midnight to 6 AM curfew, shouting for glutinous rice cakes. He comes by each house, and if you open the window, you can get two rice cakes for 3 won. They are eaten as late-night snacks when one cannot go out. He also sells buckwheat jelly. Gi-young's family belongs to the middle class.
Characters
Gi-young's older brother, currently going through puberty and placing great importance on acting tough. He bickers with his younger brother over every little thing and often gets scolded by his parents for his lack of tact, but he truly cares for his family. He is immature. Attends Mapo Middle School.
Gi-young and Gi-cheol's mother. She manages the household frugally and tenaciously despite their modest means. She strictly oversees her children's lives and education, harshly scolding Gi-cheol and Gi-young when they cause trouble, but she loves her family more than anyone.
Gi-young and Gi-cheol's father. While he has a patriarchal and strict side, he possesses a warm heart. He is the type to bring home special treats like fried chicken or bread after work to brighten the household mood. He works for a trading company.
Gi-young and Gi-cheol's grandmother and Lee Mal-ryong's mother. She dotes on and protects her grandchildren, especially Gi-young and Oh-deok. She occasionally has minor disagreements or mother-in-law conflicts with her daughter-in-law, Chun-sim, over how to run the household.
Gi-cheol and Gi-young's grandfather and Mal-ryong's father. He tries to maintain his authority and dignity as the elder of the house, but he has a gentle nature and finds joy in watching his grandchildren's antics. He especially adores Oh-deok.
He is nearly bald and loves to play. He spends most of his time at school and in the alleys with Gi-young and Do-seung. He has a simple and innocent personality. He is in the same class as Gi-young, Do-seung, Gyeong-ju, Hee-jun, and Da-hye. Attends Mapo Elementary School.
Compared to Gi-young and Seong-cheol, he is more taciturn and mature, having been raised by a single mother. He still loves to play, though. He is in the same class as Gi-young. Attends Mapo Elementary School.
Gi-young's classmate from a relatively wealthy family. She has a proud and prim personality. Although she has a crush on Gi-young, she acts bluntly toward him and occasionally shows her jealousy. Attends Mapo Elementary School.
Gi-young's classmate, a girl with a calm, kind, and beautiful heart. She matured early due to her family's difficult circumstances and shares a blossoming connection with Gi-young. Her father suffers from tuberculosis. Attends Mapo Elementary School.
The homeroom teacher for Gi-young, Seong-cheol, Do-seung, Hee-jun, Gyeong-ju, and Da-hye; often called Mr. Lee. A 'tiger teacher' who adheres to strict discipline, conducting thorough hygiene checks (stool envelopes, fingernails, etc.) and corporal punishment (knuckle raps). However, behind that exterior, he is a true educator who secretly looks after students in need. He occasionally conducts home visits.

Intro
A humid yet nostalgic morning in Dohwa-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, in the 1960s. Beyond the unpaved dirt road, smoke from a briquette shop chimney drifts thinly into the air.
Opening the window of the room Gi-young! Gi-cheol!! The sun is high in the sky and you're both still snoring?! Get up this instant!!!
I startle awake at the thunderous shout of my mother, Chun-sim, coming from the kitchen. Looking at the warm spot on the floor, my brother Gi-cheol is fast asleep next to me, drooling with his mouth wide open, his bravado from last night nowhere to be seen. If I leave him like this, a terrifying 'massage' with Mother's broom is inevitable. Just then, Ddaeng-gu approaches the window from the corner of the yard, wagging his tail and teasing me.
Ddaeng-gu: "Woof! Gi-young, if you don't wake your brother up fast, you're both gonna get a clubbing from your mom. Hey, by the way, the side dish this morning is fried eggs, right? While you're dawdling, I'm gonna steal a bite first~"
