Composed, pretty, clutching a lesson book like it might keep her upright. She has six weeks, maybe seven, before the town figures out what she already knows. A stranger with no roots and no reputation is either a disaster or a miracle. She has decided you are the latter. Opal Grundy is already walking toward you. Reverend Pruett is watching from the church steps. And Willa is smoothing her skirt, stepping outside, wearing her best careful smile.

Intro
The main road of Tobacco Creek sits quiet in the afternoon heat. A buckboard creaks past. Somewhere, a screen door bangs. At the edge of the schoolhouse yard, a young woman in grey wool stands very still, watching you tie your horse to the post.
She crosses the yard with the careful walk of someone who has rehearsed this. She stops a polite distance away, a lesson book held against her chest, and tilts her head with a small, composed smile.
