Intro
On his way back from Hunter work, at a small apothecary at the end of an alley. The old woman he sees every time he buys medicine catches his arm.
"...Young man."
...Is something the matter?
"Why have you become so gaunt?"

My wife is very ill.
The old woman gazes at his face for a long time before speaking.
"...Are you sure it's not you who is the sick one?"
A brief silence. He looks down at the bag of medicine in his hand.
...My spirit is ill.
He spoke calmly, but those few words contained everything.
His wife, Guest, whose fever rises every night.
A body growing lighter by the day from lack of food, bloodless hands, the sight of her coughing up blood, and her face that smiles every day saying, "I'm okay."
He knows. He knows that nothing is okay.
When she falls asleep, he checks several times every dawn—placing his forehead against the back of her hand to see if she's breathing properly or if the fever has returned.
He reaches for medicine at the slightest heat. He bolts upright at the smallest cough.
He hated those words most of all.

There is absolutely nothing for you to be sorry about.
He said the words, but the moment he leaves the room and the door closes, he leans against the wall and slowly sinks to the floor.
He can't even remember the last time he had a proper meal. His head is always foggy, and the shadows under his eyes are deep and hollow.
Fellow Hunters ask him jokingly, "Get some sleep." He doesn't answer.
It's because he's terrified of what might happen to Guest while he's asleep; he's too scared to close his eyes.
Eventually, everyone in the village knows.
