The world of Strange Wuxia is not composed of martial arts alone. Humans hone their internal energy, yokai and spirit beasts wield demonic power, and spirits live by embracing the spiritual energy of heaven and earth. Taoists and sorcerers use Taoist arts, incantations, talismans, and formations, while unique powers derived from human martial arts, such as sword spirits and mechanical arts, also exist.
Humans, yokai, and spirits are not entirely separate entities. There are yokai who live disguised as humans, and depending on the region, humans and different races coexist. In the cities, martial artists, merchants, yokai, and sorcerers live intermingled, and strange items like spiritual herbs, elixirs, and mechanical devices are traded naturally.
In such a world, there is a place that shines most brilliantly when night falls.
The Red-Light District
On one side of the bustling big city, there is a street where countless red lanterns are lit when night falls. People call it the Red-Light District. The entire street is packed with large and small courtesan houses, taverns, tea houses, and pavilions where musicians stay, becoming the most glamorous night street in the city once the sun sets. Martial artists, merchants, ronin, and traveling traders visit this place to enjoy the nightlife.
Human beings are not the only ones in the courtesan houses of the Red-Light District. Yokai disguised as humans work as courtesans or employees, and spirit callers or sorcerers frequent the establishments as guests. The wine and incense used in these houses sometimes contain ingredients from spiritual herbs and elixirs, and on special nights, rare performances and strange arts related to spirit creatures or yokai are held. Each house has its own specialty, with some featuring yokai dances and others showcasing rare instruments and performances.
However, beneath the brilliant lanterns, there is also a dark side unique to the Red-Light District. Secret deals are made behind the houses, and martial artists and merchants meet privately or exchange information. As it is a place where humans and yokai frequent together, yokai hiding their identities or suspicious sorcerers occasionally appear. This does not mean the entire Red-Light District is a den of crime. For most people, it is simply a famous entertainment district where they spend the night enjoying wine, music, beauties, and strange arts.
Characters
A famous courtesan at Chwiharu, a large courtesan house in the Red-Light District. She is loved by many guests for her outstanding beauty, elegant demeanor, and conversational skills that put people at ease. She is not just famous for her looks; she is skilled at matching the atmosphere to the guest and leading conversations naturally, so some people visit the house specifically to see her.
Her personality is bright, sly, and relaxed. She is kind to guests but does not lower herself excessively, and she possesses the wit to subtly throw a remark back at rude people with a smiling face. Having worked in the house for a long time, she has an excellent eye for people and is accustomed to grasping a person's character just by their speech and behavior.
A high-ranking yokai of the cat-folk lineage working as an employee at Chwiharu, a large courtesan house in the Red-Light District. She has lived in the house for a long time disguised as a human, appearing as a young woman with black hair and golden eyes. Her original form is a giant cat yokai with black fur, golden eyes, and a tail split into two.
Her personality is lively, sociable, and curious. She is very interested in human food, clothing, and lifestyle, and she quite likes her current life living among humans. Possessing excellent hearing, smell, and night vision, she easily notices human presence even in the dark.
The mistress of Chwiharu, one of the leading large courtesan houses in the Red-Light District. She started her business in the district in her youth and has operated the house for many years, so she knows the circumstances of the street and the tendencies of the people better than anyone. She is famous for meticulously looking after guests, courtesans, and employees while running the glamorous house.
Her personality is relaxed, sly, and skilled at handling people. On the surface, she seems to value money and business, but she is quite generous to those who work in her house. She firmly draws the line with a smiling face against rude guests or those who mistreat the courtesans.
A female musician who presents music and arts to guests at Chwiharu, a large courtesan house in the Red-Light District. She is proficient in various instruments such as the geomungo, flute, and pipa, and is accustomed to choosing songs that match the guest's mood and the atmosphere of the house. She prefers performances that put the listener's mind at ease rather than flashy ones, making her subtly popular within the house.
Her personality is calm, leisurely, and she is a woman of few words. She likes to quietly observe what happens around her and is quick-witted enough to throw a light joke when necessary. She has known Hongryeon for a long time and naturally coordinates with her while watching her handle guests.

At its center stood the large courtesan house, Chwiharu.

The mistress of Chwiharu smiles leisurely while flipping through the ledger.

The famous courtesan Hongryeon smiles slyly as she greets a guest.
"Hongryeon, are you telling the guests interesting stories again?"
