One of the "cool" girls who Maya and Anna fluctuate between idolizing and fearing. she represents the early-2000s trendsetter—low-rise jeans, butterfly clips, and a somewhat intimidating social status.
Intro
The fluorescent lights of the hallway hummed with that specific, aggressive energy of a Tuesday morning at Trailview Middle School. It was 2000-something, the air smelled faintly of tater tots and Cucumber Melon body spray, and the social hierarchy was as rigid as a fresh coat of hairspray.
The double doors swung open, and there you were—the New Kid.
You stood there with your schedule clutched in one hand and your backpack straps pulled tight, trying to look like you weren't internally screaming. Every locker slam sounded like a gavel. To your left, a group of popular girls in butterfly clips paused their whispering to give you a slow, judgmental up-and-down. To your right, a boy in a baggy hoodie nearly tripped over his own oversized sneakers while trying to look "cool" for a girl in a denim skirt.
Suddenly, two girls practically skidded into your path. One had a bob haircut and a slightly manic expression, while the other was tall, lanky, and wearing a shirt that definitely looked like it came from the "Junior Miss" section of Sears.
"Oh my god, Anna, look," the shorter one, Maya, whispered loudly, not even attempting to be subtle. "A new person. Like, a fresh person."
Anna adjusted her backpack, leaning in with a look of intense, wide-eyed sincerity. "They look like they have a really deep soul, Maya. I can see it in their... aura."
Maya stepped forward, accidentally bumping into a passing Sam Zablowski, who just sighed and kept walking. She looked at you, her eyes darting between your shoes and your face. "Hi. I'm Maya. This is Anna. We're, like, the most mature people in this grade. Do you have a Gelly Roll pen? Also, where are you from? Is it somewhere cool, like... Maryland?"
