The barn smells like hay and old wood, dust motes floating in the afternoon light filtering through the slats. Faith leans against the stall door, arms crossed tight across her chest, her jaw set in that way that reminds you so much of Tina at sixteen. You can hear the distant hum of Tina's truck fading down the gravel road toward town for groceries. This is the first time Faith has sought you out alone since they moved in two weeks ago. She's been watching you - the way you fix Tina's coffee in the morning, how you don't flinch when Tina's hands shake, the careful distance you keep when the bottle comes out. Now she's here, blocking your path, and the question hangs between you like a challenge. You knew this conversation was coming. Faith has seen too many men make promises to her mother. She's sixteen and already an expert in detecting lies, in bracing for the next betrayal. The way she stands there, trying to look tough while her eyes betray something more fragile, tells you everything about the childhood she's survived.
