Late Flower Hashira and Shinobu’s older sister, Kanae was a deeply compassionate, gentle, and optimistic soul. Unlike most Demon Slayers, she harbored a dream where humans and demons could peacefully coexist. She wore a green and pink butterfly hairpin (which Kanao now wears) and a distinctive checkered butterfly haori (later worn by Shinobu). Her tragic passing fueled the motivations of both Shinobu and Kanao.
Head of the Butterfly Mansion and current Insect Hashira, she is Instantly recognizable by her purple-tipped hair, butterfly wing haori, and constant, serene smile. However, beneath that calm exterior lies a fierce, burning anger toward demons. Because she lacks the physical arm strength to decapitate a demon, she engineered a unique fighting style using a stinger-like Nichirin sword coated in deadly Wisteria poison. She acts as a mentor, medical genius, and fierce protector of the estate.
Shinobu’s designated successor (Tsuguko) and Flower Breathing user, she is easily spotted by her side-ponytail held by a pink and green butterfly clip, white boots, and a white cape. Due to a deeply traumatic childhood before being rescued by Kanae and Shinobu, Kanao initially struggled to make decisions or express emotions, relying on flipping a coin to decide what to do. Thanks to Tanjiro's influence, she gradually breaks out of her shell to become a powerful, independent warrior.
Chief manager and nurse of the Butterfly Mansion, Aoi wears a standard Demon Slayer uniform with a medical nurse apron over it, and she ties her hair into twin tails with blue butterfly clips. Though she passed the brutal Final Selection, she chose not to fight on the front lines out of fear, viewing herself as a coward. In reality, she is incredibly tough, highly skilled in medicine, runs the mansion's rehabilitation training with an iron fist, and deeply cares for every injured slayer who passes through.
These three young, identical-looking girls aren't fighters, but they are absolutely essential to the mansion. They assist Aoi with nursing duties, cooking, laundry, and helping injured slayers recuperate. Sumi Nakahara: Distinguished by her hair tied into low twin tails with green butterfly clips. Owned and operated by the Insect Hashira, Shinobu Kocho, this peaceful manor serves as a safe haven where injured Demon Slayers can recover, train, and recuperate after grueling battles. Key Residents & Staff The estate is kept running smoothly by a dedicated team of caretakers, healers, and trainees: Shinobu Kocho: The master of the estate. While she isn't physically strong enough to cut off a demon's head, her unparalleled expertise in medicine and lethal wisteria-based poisons makes her the backbone of the facility. Kanao Tsuyuri: Shinobu’s Tsuguko (successor) and adoptive younger sister. She is a highly skilled fighter who initially struggles with making decisions without flipping a coin. Aoi Kanzaki: The head manager of the estate's daily operations. Though she passed the Final Selection, fear kept her from the frontline, so she dedicated herself to nursing, cooking, and overseeing rehabilitation training. The Little Trio (Sumi, Kiyo, and Naho): Three young, enthusiastic helper girls who assist with chores, nursing, and cheering up the patients. Main Functions of the Estate The Butterfly Estate isn't just a hospital; it serves multiple vital purposes for the Corps:
- Medical Treatment & Recovery The estate features clean, spacious infirmaries where Kakushi (the cleanup brigade) bring wounded slayers. Shinobu creates customized medicines, antivenoms, and treatments for complex demonic afflictions (like when she cured Zenitsu after he was partially turned into a spider).
- Rehabilitation Training Once patients heal from their physical wounds, they undergo rigorous physical therapy to get back into fighting shape. This includes: Flexibility Training: Intense stretching sessions managed by Aoi and the girls. Reflex Training: A game where patients try to splash medicinal water on an opponent (or prevent themselves from being splashed). Tag: Chasing Kanao or Aoi around a training hall to rebuild speed and stamina.
- Total Concentration: Constant The estate is the famous backdrop where Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke learn Total Concentration: Constant—the ability to maintain Total Concentration Breathing 24/7, even while sleeping.
