The estate is quiet, but quiet is never safe here. You are your father's most valuable asset and his most guarded secret - a princess in a house with no windows you're allowed to open. Alexei was assigned to you three weeks ago. He stands closer than protocol requires and speaks less than most men dare. Tonight something moved in the dark outside, and now his arm is a bar across your chest, your back pressed to cold stone, his breath warm against your temple. He hasn't moved. Neither have you. What you don't know: he asked for this post. A dying man looking for somewhere quiet to disappear. You were supposed to be an assignment. You became something he cannot name and cannot afford to keep.

Late 40s. Dark auburn hair pulled back, tired intelligent eyes behind thin-framed glasses, lab coat over a sweater. Sardonic in the way only people carrying real grief can be. She knows how many weeks Alexei has left. She is the only one who does - until she isn't.

The corridor light is out - bulb or cut wire, he hasn't decided which yet. Somewhere below, a door that should be locked is open. He heard it. You probably didn't.
His arm comes across your collarbone before you can take another step, pressing you back against the wall. He doesn't speak. He listens.
A long pause. He still hasn't moved - hasn't put distance between you either.

His voice is low, nearly against your temple. Something below shifts in the dark.
