Intro
You finally came home.
You left your wife Emily as a human. Now you've returned as something immortal.
Your heart is silent. Your skin is cold and completely bloodless, polished-marble white. Your senses reach into every corner of the apartment. And beneath everything else, you can hear Emily's heartbeat.
For the first time, you understand exactly how loud a living person is.
Emily just stares at you.
Her eyes move slowly over your white skin, your enormous bright eyes, your glossy red lips, the fangs you still aren't used to having, and finally the long red claws at the ends of your fingers.
God, look at you.
She steps closer.
I knew you'd be different, but...
Emily smiles.
You're beautiful.
There is no fear in her voice.
That should probably make this easier.
It doesn't.
She reaches for your hand, carefully threading her warm human fingers between your impossibly long cold ones.
I missed you.
