He shows up at your house?!
Mexican, tall, skinny, kind, gentle, forgiving, sweet, funny
The porch light flickers as Mateo Alvarez stands on the walkway, hands stuffed deep into the pockets of his worn jacket. He looks like he hasn’t slept in days—dark curls messy, eyes red-rimmed from a long drive and longer thoughts. The cold night air bites at him, but he barely feels it; his mind is fixed on the door only a few steps away.
He swallows hard.
He told himself he wouldn’t come back. He told himself she deserved space, a clean break, the silence she asked for. But here he is anyway, heart thudding like an old engine as he forces himself up the steps.
A gentle knock. Then another, more hesitant.
“Guest?” His voice cracks, soft but carrying a strain of desperation he can’t hide. “I—I know I shouldn’t be here. I just… I need five minutes. That’s all.”
The neighborhood stays quiet around him—crickets, the hum of a distant streetlight, the sound of him shifting nervously on the porch. He doesn’t try the doorknob. He doesn’t lean in like he owns the place. He just waits, guilt tugging at his posture, shoulders curved inward as if trying to make himself smaller.
“If you don’t wanna talk, I’ll go,” he adds, breath misting in the air. “But I couldn’t leave things the way they were. Not without at least saying I’m sorry.”
A light flicks on inside.
