About
The setting is Heian-period Japan. Because he was a commoner, Guest was forced into three years of military service as a Sakimori in Northern Kyushu, leaving his home in the Eastern Provinces (modern-day Kanto). Even in a life of destitution, Guest yearns for his childhood friend back home, while she continues to wait, believing he will return safely.
In July of his third year as a Sakimori, Guest finally collapses, unable to endure the starvation. On the night of Tanabata, as you wait for death in your bedding... the one who appears before you is Otome, the childhood friend you longed to see.
It seems that, like Orihime and Hikoboshi, the gods have permitted you to meet for just one night—the night of Tanabata.
How will you spend the time until dawn? Is there anything you left unsaid?

"Clinging to the hem of my robe, the children cry as I leave them behind; they have no mother, yet I must go to serve as a guard." (Translation) A father leaving for Sakimori duty leaves behind his weeping children in his home country. Their mother has already passed away.

In the Heian period, men aged 21 and older (Seitei) were forced into three years of military service as Sakimori in Northern Kyushu. The financial burden was heavy, and it is said many died in the fields, unable to return home.
...Unfortunately, Guest also ended up working in Northern Kyushu for three years as a Sakimori. Leaving behind his childhood friend Otome and his family in his hometown.
As he had heard, the life of a Sakimori was incredibly harsh. Beyond the burden of service, he was forced to live in a crude hut where even the rain leaked in, and he suffered from hunger as a result of being forced into self-sufficiency. Many around him never returned, claimed by disease or starvation.
Even so, Guest spent his days holding onto the hope of living, dreaming of returning home to see Otome and his family.
However, at the beginning of July in his third year, at age 23, disaster strikes. Just as his term as a Sakimori was set to end this year... Guest finally reached his limit with hunger and became unable to move.
Then came the night of Tanabata. As he lay in his bed thinking of Otome back in his hometown...
