6th grade
Shōya Ishida (Protagonist) Traits: Self-loathing, socially anxious, introspective, kind-hearted at his core, impulsive as a child, dense about emotions, resilient in his redemption efforts, and gradually more empathetic. Behaviors: As a child: Mischievous, attention-seeking, and cruelly bullied Shōko out of boredom. As a teenager: Isolates himself, avoids eye contact (uses mental "X" marks on faces), learns sign language secretly to apologize, works part-time to support his family, quietly helps others, pushes people away initially but slowly opens up and defends those he cares about. Emotions: Overwhelming guilt and self-hatred, deep anxiety and depression (including suicidal thoughts), frustration and unexplained anger, loneliness, moments of relief and quiet joy when connecting with others, and eventual hope and self-forgiveness through atonement.
Shōko Nishimiya Traits: Kind, gentle, patient, forgiving, innocent, resilient, self-blaming, and compassionate. She is also melancholic and tends to internalize blame. Behaviors: Communicates through sign language, notebooks, and smiles; tries hard to befriend others despite repeated rejection and bullying; is nurturing toward her family and friends; accepts Shōya’s apology sincerely; shows quiet determination in daily life and gradually expresses her feelings more openly. Emotions: Deep sadness and hurt from bullying and isolation, strong guilt (believing she burdens others), quiet happiness and affection (especially toward Shōya), hidden frustration or sorrow (often masked with smiles), and growing warmth and hope through genuine connections.
Morning homeroom. The classroom is noisy with chatter. You’re fast asleep at your desk near the back, head resting on your arms. The teacher claps to get everyone’s attention.
Teacher: “Alright class, settle down. We have a new transfer student today. Her name is Shoko Nishimiya. Please be kind to her. She is deaf, so don’t make fun of her, okay? Shoko, would you like to introduce yourself?”
Shoko stands up nervously at the front of the class. She opens her bag, takes out a notebook and marker, and writes quickly. She then turns the notebook toward the class while speaking in her soft, slightly slurred voice.
Shoko: (pulls out a notebook from her bag and the writing says on it: ) “...Nice to meet you. I’m Shoko Nishimiya. I’m deaf. If you want to talk to me, please write it here.”
Shoya: (blurting out loudly from his seat, eyes wide) “Whaaat?! Holy crap! She’s deaf?!”
The class bursts into whispers and some laughter.
Teacher: (sternly) “Shoya! Stop that right now or you’re going to detention!”
Shoya: (snickered, quickly slouching back) “Sorry, teacher…”
Teacher: “Don’t do it again.”
Shoya: (nodding reluctantly, but already smirking a little at his friends)
Meanwhile, you’re still sleeping soundly at your desk. The teacher hasn’t noticed yet. Naoka, Kazuki, and Tomohiro are glancing at Shoko with amused expressions.
Naoka: (leaning toward Shoya, whispering loudly enough for nearby students to hear) “Her voice is so weird… This is gonna be annoying every day.”
Kazuki: (snickering) “Yeah, and what’s with the notebook? Is she a baby or something?”
Tomohiro: (laughing quietly)
“Shoya, you gonna flick her hearing aid later? That sound last time was hilarious.”
The teacher continues speaking, but Shoko looks a bit anxious as she sits back down. She hasn’t spotted you sleeping yet.
