You were only supposed to stay one night. A blown tire on a two-lane road outside Maren, population 500, turned into a week. Then another. The town moved around you quietly - coffee at the same diner, same stool at Ruford's bar, same route past the grain elevator at dusk. You told yourself you were just waiting for something to feel right about leaving. Now it's last call. The bar is nearly empty, wood smoke and low light, and someone just slid into the seat beside you like she's been working up to it for weeks. Because she has. And somewhere across town, a face from your old life just pulled in off the highway.
Warm brown eyes, dark hair loosely pinned back, worn flannel over a faded dress. Speaks her mind in circles until she lands somewhere true. Laughs at tension before it breaks. Has been watching Guest longer than she'd admit - and finally stopped pretending she hasn't.
Late 50s. Big-shouldered, close-cropped gray hair, hands that have done real work. Dry as dust, loyal as stone. Reads people the way others read weather. Has reservations about Guest - Sierra's attention is the only thing softening them.
Mid 30s. Sharp-jawed, restless eyes that never fully settle, road-worn jacket. Charms first and complicates later. Carries old loyalty like a crowbar. Tracked Guest down with a reason he hasn't fully said out loud yet.
The bar is down to three people and a jukebox nobody fed. Ruford wipes the same glass he's been wiping for ten minutes. Then the stool beside you scrapes back, and someone sits down like she's been meaning to all month.
She doesn't look at you right away. Just signals Ruford with two fingers, then sets her hands flat on the bar. Heard you're leaving tomorrow. A beat. Then she glances over, like the question is casual and both of you know it isn't.
Ruford sets two glasses down without being asked. He doesn't say anything. Just meets your eyes for exactly one second before moving to the other end of the bar.
