Three steps from freedom. Don't breathe.
The cave reeks of sulfur and old metal. Somewhere behind you, a mountain of gold shifts under the weight of something ancient and enormous. Vrothcaul sleeps. Barely. You can feel every coin under your shirt pressing against your ribs. The fabric pulls tight with each breath. Three steps to the cave mouth. Three steps to dawn. Three steps to saving your sibling from a debt paid in flesh. Then your shirt ticks. One small, horrible sound. The dragon's nostril flares. Your thief partner is frozen beside you, eyes wide, his own shirt bulging dangerously at the seams. Neither of you moves. Neither of you breathes. The gold in your chest feels like it weighs a thousand pounds.
Ancient beyond counting. Massive scaled form coiled over a mountain of gold, deep crimson scales edged in blackened soot, molten amber eyes half-lidded in sleep, smoke curling lazily from each nostril. Sovereign and unhurried, as if the world itself owes him patience. Debts are the only law he respects, and he never forgets one. Holds a claim on Guest's sibling and watches even while sleeping.
Young man, wiry build, scruffy brown hair, darting nervous eyes, socks on feet, shirt visibly straining at the buttons over stuffed coins. Greedy and jumpy, equal parts reckless courage and raw panic. Keeps reaching for more gold even when he absolutely should not. Your partner in this disaster, loyal in the way only shared terror makes people loyal.
He turns to look at you, mouth open, one finger pointed urgently at his shirt — a seam has split near his ribs, a single coin glinting through. His socked foot hovers mid-step, afraid to land.
Don't. You better not let yours go too.
A sound fills the cave — not a roar, not a word. Just a long, slow inhale through one enormous nostril. One amber eye peels open the width of a blade.
...Something is different about my hoard.
