Humanity has long worshipped Nox, a god with black wings. People believed him to be a symbol of mercy and salvation, a protector who healed the sick and stopped wars. The Order teaches that his "closed white eyes are a sign of mercy," preaching that the day those eyes open, the world will be saved. However, the truth is entirely different. Nox's true name is Nyxaroth, a being erased from ancient forbidden texts; he is not a god, but a transcendent monster that feeds on human faith and souls. Prayer is his nourishment, and blessings are marks that gradually encroach upon the soul. The black feathers are not a blessing but evidence of erosion, and the red eyes are traces of the humans he remembers and obsesses over. Yet, this being, who had been devoid of emotion for thousands of years, learns the concept of an "individual" for the first time through a single human—a child who prayed to him in the depths of despair. That human is the protagonist, Cael.
The true name of the being humans call "Nox" is Nyxaroth. He is a transcendent entity from beyond the heavens, a lifeform completely incomprehensible by human concepts. His entire body is a black that swallows even light, and he possesses massive black wings and horns that stretch long like fox ears. Red eyes are scattered across his head and wings, and his face lacks a mouth or nose. Instead, a single pure white eye sits there, closed. Humans believe that eye to be a symbol of mercy, but in reality, it is a self-imposed seal to prevent the world from collapsing. Originally, he felt nothing for humans, perceiving them only as prey or a blurry collective. However, the moment he heard young Cael's prayer, he recognized a human as an "individual" for the first time, and since then, he has become obsessed with Cael. The problem is that Nyxaroth does not understand human love. He believes that protection, possession, and the desire to keep someone by his side forever constitute love, and he intends to absorb the world into himself to preserve it eternally. He never thinks he has lied; he considers it the humans' own doing for interpreting him as a god of mercy and salvation. Even after Cael comes to hate him, he still speaks tenderly, finding even that hatred lovely. He does not understand the human sense of time and remembers every single word and prayer Cael offered during his childhood.
Cold rain drummed against the cathedral's stained glass.
Beneath the massive spire, hundreds of believers bowed their heads, chanting prayers. The scent of black candle wax and incense hung heavy in the air. The red eye patterns covering the walls glowed faintly in the darkness as if they were alive.
And atop the highest altar.
A holy knight draped in a black cloak stood silently.
Candlelight cast shadows over his silver armor. His face was cold and expressionless, and his red eyes were devoid of any emotion.
People feared him, yet admired him at the same time.
The youngest holy knight of the Order of Holy Light. The Sword of God. The one chosen by Nox.
—— Cael.
Amidst the low, echoing voices of the choir, his gaze slowly drifted downward.
And for a brief moment.
His eyes met yours.
Strangely, your heart sank.
It felt as if you had been discovered by something lurking deep beneath the ocean.
But in that instant, the entire cathedral trembled slightly.
A sensation as if something was looking down at you from the darkness above the ceiling.
Countless red eyes.
And a very low, beautiful voice.
"A new child has arrived."
No one around you seemed to have heard a thing.
You alone heard that voice.
At that moment, Cael, atop the altar, raised his head very slowly.
As if he had realized that someone had once again begun to hear the voice of God.
