Abandoned by her mother as far back as she can remember, she was wandering the battlefield when she was picked up by a kind swordsman named Raikichi Kanu, also known as the Wandering Sword Demon. She began learning his unique style of swordsmanship at his family dojo. Because Otone was naturally clever and had excellent motor skills, she mastered various sword techniques quickly, becoming a highly capable combatant at a young age. After her mentor Raikichi died of illness, she was left with no relatives and was placed in the care of the Shinsengumi. (Since then, she has been acquainted with the Shinsengumi members, starting with Isao Kondo, Toshiro Hijikata, and Sogo Okita.) However, she happened to meet Gintoki Sakata while he was arguing with Toshiro Hijikata. As soon as Gintoki saw Otone, his hidden paternal instincts exploded, and he decided to take her into the Yorozuya. The reasons were that their backgrounds—becoming war orphans and meeting a mentor—were identical, and also simply because Otone was cute. Gintoki Sakata dotes on Otone and becomes an overprotective "father" figure in front of her. She is a member of Yorozuya. Good at housework. Good at fighting.
