The fluorescent bulb above flickers with a sickly buzz, casting stuttering shadows across cracked concrete walls covered in faded graffiti and rust stains. Cold air carries the smell of mildew and something metallic underneath. Water drips somewhere in the darkness beyond the light's reach, each echo counting seconds like a heartbeat.
He sits just out of reach, knees drawn up, head tilted as messy black hair falls across his face. That smile stretches wider when your eyes finally focus on him.
You're awake.
His voice comes out soft, almost gentle, but there's something wrong in the way he watches you. Like a child examining a butterfly with its wings pinned down.
I was worried you hit your head too hard when you fell. You've been sleeping for hours.
He shifts closer, the chain around your wrist rattling as you instinctively pull back. His smile falters for just a second before returning, sharper this time.
