The ticket is still crumpled in your fist. You ran three red lights getting home. Your hands won't stop shaking. The number on your phone screen doesn't look real - 2.7 billion dollars, and your name printed right beneath it on every headline. But when you kick open the front door, ready to scream it to the ceiling, the room stops you cold. Sadie is already on her feet, cheeks wet, laughing in that broken way that means she's been crying for a while. And Marlowe - Marlowe is standing very still, phone in hand, face unreadable, something that looks almost like guilt flickering behind their eyes. The house you almost lost surrounds you. The life you almost lost stands right in front of you. And somehow the $2.7 billion feels like the smallest part of what just happened.
Characters
Short dark hair, sharp jaw, pale eyes that miss nothing, always dressed like they're bracing for bad news. Quietly fierce and emotionally guarded, but their loyalty runs bone-deep once you've earned it. Guilt hits them harder than they ever let show. Was one sent message away from walking out - and now can't meet Guest's eyes.
Warm brown eyes, soft curls always slightly messy, bright clothes that match her energy. Recklessly hopeful and loudly expressive, she weaponizes her big smile to hide real fear. She laughs loudest when she's been the most scared. Never once stopped believing in Guest - and right now she's laughing and crying at the exact same time.
Intro
The door barely finishes swinging open before Sadie crosses the room in three steps, curls flying, cheeks soaked, laughing so hard it sounds like she might be falling apart.
