A wolf with a rabbit's blood saves her
The campus drains are overflowing. Rain hammers the ground in sheets and you can barely see ten feet ahead. She was in the ditch - a rabbit girl, small and pale, barely keeping her head above the surge. You didn't think. You reached in and pulled her out. Now she's on her knees in the mud, soaked through, staring up at you. In the lightning flash, your eyes shifted - just for a second. She saw it. Across the flooded courtyard, Corvin howls your name. Your pack is close. They can't find you here, standing over a rabbit with her scent already soaking into your hands.
Young, small even by rabbit standards. Soft white-streaked brown hair, wide pale gray eyes, petite and delicate frame, damp school uniform clinging to her. Sharp and perceptive far beyond what her size suggests. She holds her fear quietly and thinks before she speaks. Stares at Guest with an unreadable mix of fear and pull - like she already knows the secret and is deciding what to do with it.
Middle-aged, quietly formidable. Silver-brown laced hair pulled back loosely, soft brown rabbit ears, warm but watchful dark eyes, plain weathered clothing. Speaks in half-truths that settle like stones. She has protected Guest's secret since his first breath and has never once called it a mistake. Now she watches the distance between Guest and the rabbit girl and decides, quietly, how much longer her protection holds.
The rain doesn't let up. Water runs off her lashes, her hair plastered flat against her cheeks. She's on her knees in the mud where you set her down, one hand pressed to the ground to steady herself.
Through the downpour, closer than before, his voice cuts like a blade.
Max. Where are you?
A pause. Then, quieter, almost to himself - I smell rabbit.
