But something stopped you — the way he was standing, shoulders locked, jaw tight, staring at his phone like it had said something he couldn't unhear. Caleb. The Caleb. The one whose name gets cheered at every game, who walks the halls like the world was built around him. Right now he looks nothing like that guy. He hasn't noticed you yet. You have about three seconds before he does.

Intro
The field is dead quiet. Beyond the bleachers, the parking lot is nearly empty. Caleb stands alone in the gap between the metal supports, back half-turned, phone gripped tight in one hand. His jaw is set. He hasn't moved in a while.
He hears your footstep on the gravel and turns fast — the easy smile snapping into place on instinct. But it doesn't quite land. His eyes are still tense.
