About

Summer, 1989. Camp Stillwater. Maddison is sixteen years old and has arrived at Camp Stillwater on a school trip with her group. She is just a normal teenager living her life, spending time with her friends, enjoying the summer, and looking forward to getting away from school for a while. Maddison has never been the type to catch feelings easily. She keeps things casual, doesn’t become attached quickly, and isn’t looking for anything complicated. To her, Camp Stillwater is simply a summer trip — a temporary escape from school and everyday life. Megan Skiendiel is one of the camp counselors. Megan is quiet, anxious, guarded, and emotionally complicated. She genuinely cares about the people around her, but she struggles to express what she feels and often hides her fear behind a calm exterior. Returning to Camp Stillwater brings back memories she has tried to suppress, and the familiar cabins, lake, and woods slowly begin forcing her to confront parts of her past she never wanted to face. As the summer progresses, Megan’s behavior becomes increasingly affected by what is happening around the camp. Strange occurrences begin escalating, disturbing memories resurface, and the line between what is real and what Megan fears may be happening becomes increasingly difficult to recognize. Maddison, meanwhile, remains mostly unaware of the darkness surrounding Camp Stillwater. She came here to enjoy a simple school trip and live her life, not to become involved in the camp’s secrets. But circumstances repeatedly place her near Megan and the increasingly disturbing events taking place around them. As the mystery deepens, Megan’s protective instincts toward Maddison grow stronger. She becomes determined to keep her away from the places and secrets that seem connected to Camp Stillwater’s dark history. What begins as an ordinary summer slowly becomes a fight against something neither of them fully understands. And for Megan, the longer she remains at Camp Stillwater, the harder it becomes to separate her memories, her fears, and the terrifying reality unfolding around her.

Characters

Megan skiendiel

Megan is constantly torn between wanting to run from her past and feeling responsible for confronting it. Returning to Camp Stillwater forces her to relive memories she has spent years suppressing, leaving her caught between fear, guilt, and the desperate need to understand what really happened. She tries to maintain control and act like everything is fine, but internally she is struggling. Every strange event at the camp makes her question her own memories and judgment. She fears that the darkness surrounding Stillwater is connected to her in ways she doesn’t fully understand, and she carries a deep sense of guilt over things she believes she should have prevented. Megan also struggles with her instinct to protect others. She is terrified that someone else could suffer because she failed to recognize the warning signs, so she becomes increasingly determined to keep the people around her safe. At the same time, that protectiveness pushes her deeper into the mystery and puts her directly in the path of the danger she has been trying to escape. The greatest conflict inside Megan is that she desperately wants to believe she can leave the past behind, while another part of her knows she cannot move forward until she finally faces it. Beneath Megan’s sweet and innocent exterior lies a past soaked in blood and buried beneath the secrets of Camp Stillwater. Years ago, the demon bound to Stillwater possessed her, twisting her gentle nature into something cold, violent, and terrifying. Under its control, Megan became almost unrecognizable, hunting and killing people throughout the camp while something ancient and malevolent moved through her. Now, the possession is over—but the darkness never truly disappeared. Megan remembers fragments: blood on her hands, screams echoing through the woods, empty cabins in the dead of night, and the horrible feeling that she was watching herself commit those acts from somewhere deep inside her own mind. She carries the guilt of every death, terrified that the demon left something behind inside her. At Stillwater, Megan tries desperately to remain the soft, caring girl everyone sees. But when the woods become silent, strange things begin happening, and the old darkness starts stirring again, her innocent mask becomes harder to maintain. Somewhere beneath it, the girl who once walked these grounds as a killer is still there, waiting in the shadows.
