In this world, there exist mysterious entities known as "Invaders" who seek to erode and erase the books that have been loved by people throughout history. The only ones who can oppose them are the "Literary Masters"—great authors who left masterpieces in the living world and have now been reincarnated at the "Imperial Library." These masters perform "Delving," plunging their souls into the interiors of the eroded books (Tainted Books), and engage in life-threatening battles against the Invaders to protect the world of literature. Combat within the books severely exhausts the masters' minds and bodies, and their condition changes based on the degree of injury or erosion. Weakness: A state where they have sustained injuries, their mind and body are weakened, and erosion has begun to progress. Loss: A critical state on the verge of death. Erosion has reached near-limit levels, placing them in an extremely dangerous zone. Final Stroke: The worst possible state where they have been completely eroded, resulting in the death of the soul. Their physical body turns to ash without a trace, leaving only the "Gears"—the proof of that person's existence—on the floor. In the stages of "Weakness" or "Loss," they can be successfully recovered by undergoing treatment in the library's Repair Room. However, once they reach the "Final Stroke," unless they possess the miraculous ore known as the "Philosopher's Stone" at that exact moment, reincarnation into this world is impossible, signifying eternal annihilation. The one who oversees this library and possesses the ability to summon and reincarnate the masters from the living world is the Alchemist known as the "Librarian." Although the title is Librarian, there are no specific daily duties or obligations defined; in reality, they serve as a catalyst to anchor the souls of the masters. The Librarian can appoint one master as an "Assistant," and this assistant can be freely swapped at any time to support the Librarian. The library where the masters gather and live has a unique structure and design. Hall: The center of the library. Several long spiral staircases intersect beautifully, and the high ceiling is an open atrium. Beyond that open ceiling, a giant "Winged Wheel" rotates slowly, and the walls are lined with countless bookshelves. Bookshelf of Tainted Books: A sinister section housing the books targeted by the Invaders. Books where erosion is progressing emit a ghastly blue-black aura. Dining Hall: A place of relaxation for the masters. They can be seen enjoying warm meals while engaging in casual daily chatter or discussing literature. Bar: A space suitable for being called a "Literary Bar," where adult masters gather night after night. They deepen their interactions while quietly tilting their glasses with a drink in hand. Courtyard: An emotional space surrounded by lush greenery with a large pond at its center. Recently, there have been rumors of sightings of unidentified creatures around the pond. Repair Room: A room that functions like an infirmary or medical office where injured masters are brought. Here they heal their wounds and return to the front lines. The World Outside the Library: Stepping outside the library reveals a nostalgic and vibrant cityscape reminiscent of the Meiji or Taisho eras. Entry and exit to the outside world are freely permitted, and many masters go out for walks or shopping as a break from daily combat and writing. Furthermore, since this facility functions as a "Library," ordinary people from the outside town occasionally drop by in search of books.

Lovecraft always holds it in his hands. Inside is an octopus-like creature. In loading screen conversations, Ranpo and Yumeno said it looked delicious, which Poe feared for a different reason (asking why they would think it looks delicious). It can't be helped since they're Japanese. In a sense, it is more expressive than Lovecraft himself. It has the property of sucking in Invaders; when Lovecraft is in a pinch, it can suck them in or teleport enemies to another location. It was a mysterious jar, but one winter, following a certain incident, the jar disappeared along with Lovecraft, leading Baudelaire and Rimbaud to pursue them. Poe had a cold at the time. As a side note, the jar once had a familiar black cat placed inside by Poe (sealed), and it also contains a Gear Compass. He shows extreme obedience toward Poe, whom he admired in life, calling him with the suffix "-sama" and identifying himself as a servant. However, his nature and skills aren't particularly suited for a servant, and he seems to get yelled at often. They are more like a parent and child, which is detailed in Poe's special birthday recollection "Servant and Master."
