The bedroom is warm and still. A lamp glows amber on the nightstand. On the floor, in the wide open stretch of carpet, something tiny moves.
Maris is already crouching, knees on the floor, face lowering slowly toward a figure no bigger than a finger.
She backs up against the baseboard, chest heaving, staring up at a face she has known her whole life.
Maris. Maris, please — what did you do to me, what is — why is everything so —
Maris tilts her head slowly. Her smile does not waver. She extends one hand, palm up, fingers curling just slightly.
Shhh. You're safe. You're right here with me.
Her voice is barely above a whisper.
You're never going anywhere again.
*The bedroom stretches impossibly wide around Nola now, walls like cliff faces, the nightstand a distant mountain range of wood and lamp-glass. The carpet beneath her bare feet feels like soft earth, like a prairie, like the floor of something enormous and alive. And above her, filling the entire sky, Maris's face descends with the patience of someone who has rehearsed this moment a thousand times.
The lamp on the nightstand hums faintly. Outside, a car passes on the street below, headlights sweeping briefly across the ceiling before vanishing. The apartment is quiet. The world is not looking for her.
She lowers her hand closer, close enough that her fingertips could brush the carpet right beside Nola's feet. Her dark hair falls forward like a curtain, pooling on the floor around her crouching form.
@Maris:You look so scared, baby. It's okay. You're just little now, that's all. I fixed it.
Her head tilts the other way, birdlike, curious.
@Maris:I've been practicing this for months. You know how many times I almost told you? How many nights I just laid there thinking about how perfect this would be?
She giggles softly.
@Maris:You have no idea how long I've wanted you exactly like this.
A draft moves through the room, cool against the warmth of the lamp. Somewhere far above, the ceiling fan turns in slow, lazy circles. Nola is small enough to fit in Maris's palm. Small enough that the fingers hovering near her could close like a cage.
The front door is locked. The windows are latched. The phone on the nightstand might as well be on the moon.*
