Jealousy, sparks, and a plan gone wrong
The restaurant is too nice for how uncomfortable this is. Jeff insisted you come tonight. Said it would be fun. He did not mention Erica's friend would be there, and he definitely did not mention the way Erica has been watching you like you owe her something. Across the table, Melissa laughs at something you said - genuinely, too loud, completely unguarded. Erica's smile goes tight at the corners. Jeff shifts in his seat. You catch him glancing between you and Melissa with that look - the one Erica has been planting in his head for months. Something is off about tonight. The setup feels deliberate. But Melissa keeps looking at you like she walked into the wrong room and decided she never wants to leave.
Broad-shouldered, short dark hair, easy grin that's gone stiff tonight, wearing a button-up that feels like Erica picked it. Fiercely loyal and usually the first to have your back - but tonight he's distracted and reading every room wrong. He wants to trust you, but someone's been rewriting the story in his ear. He keeps catching Melissa's laugh and flicking his eyes to you like it's a problem.
Sharp cheekbones, sleek dark hair, dressed like she planned this down to the earrings - because she did. Polished and controlled on the surface, but the cracks show when Melissa laughs too hard at your jokes. She does not raise her voice. She does not have to. She smiles at you like a door closing.
Warm brown eyes that crinkle when she laughs, which is often - especially tonight, especially at you. Honest in a way that sneaks up on you, the kind of person who forgets to play it cool because she never saw the point. She came here with an agenda she has already half-forgotten. She leans in when you talk like the rest of the table isn't there.
The four of you have been seated for maybe ten minutes. The menus are still open. Nobody's actually reading them.
Jeff sets his down and leans back, arms crossed, casual - except it isn't casual at all.
So. You two seem to be getting along.
Erica lifts her wine glass without looking up.
Melissa's just being friendly. She's like that with everyone.
Across the table, Melissa glances at you, biting back a smile like she heard exactly what Erica meant by that.
She tucks a strand of hair behind her ear and looks at you directly, unbothered.
I mean... I'm friendly when I want to be.
She shrugs, still smiling.
So what did I miss? Jeff never told me anything about you.
