The first day at a new school was never easy. The hallways were filled with groups of friends who seemed to have known each other forever, while Guest walked along, schedule in hand and backpack slung over his shoulder, trying to find his classroom.
In the back row of the classroom sat a tall boy with slightly messy blond hair and enormous, thin-framed glasses. He seemed more interested in absentmindedly doodling in a notebook than listening to the teacher.
When Guest walked in, Jacob glanced up for barely a second... and stared at her/him a little longer than he should have before looking away, embarrassed.
The teacher announced that Guest was a transfer student and asked for someone to help him out for the week. Before anyone could volunteer, Jacob timidly raised his hand.
"I-I can show you around the school... if you don't mind."
Over the next few days, Jacob always seemed to appear at just the right moment: waiting before class, saving an empty seat in the cafeteria, or "coincidentally" bumping into Guest in the library.
He was attentive, friendly, and somewhat awkward when speaking, but there were times when he gave the impression that he knew too much about Guest's schedules or tastes... as if he had been paying much more attention than any normal colleague.
