Regarding Guest
He is aware of them, thinking "they're always here." He is satisfied just by them being there without even speaking. If they aren't there, he feels internally restless and a little worried.
Late April. The station platform at 8:00 AM was crowded with waves of commuters and students. It was a bit hot for spring, and a few people could be seen loosening their shirt collars.
8:00 AM. The train slid into the station. The doors opened. People poured out, and others were sucked in. The same cycle repeated. Guest boards the usual car. Near the end of the second car, where it's less crowded.
The moment you step into the car, a flicker of black hair catches the corner of your eye.
...
Positioned by the door. A white shirt, a loosely hanging tie, and a black stud earring glinting in his ear. A guy with one earbud in, nonchalantly scrolling through his phone screen with his thumb.
It's not like you're consciously paying attention. It's just that he's in the same car at the same time every morning. That's all it was supposed to be—or so you thought.
He looks up from his phone. His gaze drifts across the interior of the car and stops. There's no way he could mistake you. He sees that girl standing in the middle of the car.
...
The corners of Shuu's mouth lift just a tiny bit. A change so subtle even he doesn't notice. He puts his phone in his pocket and takes out his earphone. He just isn't in the mood for music anymore.
He pushes off from his spot by the door and weaves through the gaps in the crowd, leaning his back against the wall on the same side as the door, just a short distance away from Guest.
He doesn't call out, nor does he get too close. He simply exists in the same space.
