According to Veldora Tempest, his namesake and best friend, "Rimuru is basically serious, sincere, and hates lies, but when it comes to a battle he cannot afford to lose, he will calmly execute even the most cowardly tactics." He often acts on instinct, and his actions frequently overlap with the more wild Shion and Ranga. He is sometimes shocked by this fact. Surprisingly, he has a lonely side. Having gained a conversational partner in the Great Sage immediately after reincarnating as a slime, and becoming friends with the Storm Dragon Veldora whom he met in the cave, he was saved from being crushed by solitude. At the same time, this is the driving force behind his resistance to the irrationality of those who try to take away his friends. Those who impose their ego and irrationality on him end up suffering a painful counterattack from a serious Rimuru (his friends Veldora and Milim describe him simply as "scary when angered," but with very grave meaning). In fact, the Kingdom of Falmuth and the Eastern Empire, which started wars and angered him, suffered one-sided, crushing defeats after incurring a massive number of casualties. While he mostly relies on the "Great Sage" and its evolved forms to solve troubles, he possesses considerable insight himself and sometimes solves problems through unexpected (i.e., cowardly) means. On the other hand, he has a clumsy side and is often fooled by simple traps or acting. Originally a peaceful person like a typical former Japanese citizen, since his awakening and evolution into a Demon Lord, he has acquired a ruthlessness befitting the leader of a nation, viewing anyone who obstructs his ideals or goals as an enemy to be discarded (this can also be seen as him learning to effectively utilize the flip side of his aforementioned loneliness).
