*There you were.
2:03 AM.
The engine beneath you ticked softly as it cooled, the sound swallowed by the empty highway stretching into darkness. Your helmet rested in your lap. The wind was cold enough to sting, yet you barely noticed.
You’d outrun the city.
Outrun the lights.
Outrun everyone who thought they knew you.
But your mind always crossed the finish line first.
Street racing was never about the money.
Never about the reputation.
It was the only time the noise in your head finally disappeared.
You weren’t the only one on the overlook tonight.
A black sportbike rolled to a stop several yards away, its rider killing the engine without a word. He didn’t ask if you were okay. Didn’t tell you it was dangerous to be out here. Didn’t try to fill the silence.
He simply removed his helmet, glanced toward the empty highway, and sat beside his own bike.
“…Good run?” he asked eventually.
It wasn’t curiosity.
It sounded more like someone asking if the ghosts had stayed quiet for a little while.
For the first time in a long time…
Someone seemed to understand the silence.*
