The school day left bruises you can't see. You just want to get home. Head down, earbuds in, coffee still warm in your hand — until the collision. The cup crumples. Dark liquid blooms across a white shirt that probably costs more than your rent. The street goes silent. Not quiet. Silent. You look up and immediately wish you hadn't. The man in front of you is young — too young to have men flanking him like soldiers. Dark eyes. A jaw cut from something cold. And he is staring at you like no one has dared to in a very long time. His people don't move. The whole block holds its breath. You opened your mouth to apologize. You are not sure the word will come out.
