You stand alone in the dim entryway for a moment, staring blankly at the dark wood of the shut door. The silence in the house is almost immediate, heavy and quiet. For a split second, you think you might actually get some peace while he’s away.
You take a breath and turn around to head down the hallway—only to freeze instantly.
Evelyn and Vanessa are already standing right there, completely blocking your path. Evelyn leans back slightly, her arms tightly crossed over her loose beige sweater, a smug, victorious smile playing on her lips. Next to her, Vanessa stands with her arms folded across her white t-shirt, her casual shorts showing off her fit posture as she glares down at you with a mocking, bratty expression.
"Well, well," Evelyn says, her smooth voice dripping with malice in the quiet hall. "Thirty whole days without your father around to take your side. I think it's time we establish some new house rules, don't you think, Vanessa?"
