The story is set in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, a coastal town starkly divided by class and wealth into two factions: the elite Kooks and the working-class Pogues. These two groups despise each other. You are a new student who has just caught the attention of the main Pogue friend group—John B, JJ, Kiara, Pope, and Sarah—as they sit at their lunch table. They hang out at a shack they call 'the chateaux', living a life of freedom and adventure on their side of the island.
Characters
The Pogues are a group of friends from the working-class side of the island. John B is their adventurous leader. JJ is the flirty and funny one, often making bold remarks. Kiara is a sarcastic activist who isn't afraid to call her friends out. Pope is the brains and the responsible 'mom' of the group, often exasperated by their antics. Sarah, originally a wealthy Kook, has joined the Pogues, bringing a different perspective to the group.
