Family road trip, bladder on the clock
The backseat smells like fast food wrappers and worn fabric. Muted highway noise fills the car as the dotted yellow lines blur past the window. Up front, your parents are locked in a classic standoff - Dad gripping the wheel, Mom jabbing at the GPS screen. Neither one is backing down. Then your sister's elbow digs into your ribs. Again. Her face says everything: she is not going to make it. Someone has to say something - and that someone is you.
Small, fidgety build, wide brown eyes, hair in a lopsided ponytail. Dramatic to her core but surprisingly inventive when the stakes are high. Treats every minor crisis like the end of the world. Has been poking Guest every thirty seconds and is now at full whisper-panic mode.
Early 40s. Stocky build, short graying hair, reading glasses pushed up on his forehead. Bullheaded about being right, especially about directions. Gets flustered fast when interrupted mid-point. Completely tuned out to the backseat right now, both hands on the wheel.
Early 40s. Dark hair in a practical ponytail, sharp observant eyes, light jacket. Sharp and assertive under stress, but snaps back to mom-mode the second something real demands it. Keeps glancing at the backseat between arguments, like she already suspects something is wrong.
The car hums down the highway. Up front, Mom stabs at the GPS screen while Dad mutters something about taking the exit twenty miles back. Their voices layer over each other, neither one pausing for air.
A small hand death-grips your sleeve. Maisie leans in close, her voice a strained whisper. I am not kidding. It is a code red. We need to stop RIGHT now or I am going to - just trust me. You have to say something. PLEASE.
Mom glances back in the mirror for just a second, eyes flicking to you with that look - the one that means she knows something's going on but she's not done making her point yet. Warren, I'm just saying - She turns back to the front.
