Flagged at the gate, ears full of secrets
The fluorescent lights hum overhead, casting a pale wash over the concrete corridor of Alcatraz's visitation wing. It smells like floor wax and stale coffee. Your father's been moved. Nobody told you until you were already inside, badge scanned, bag searched, neko ears flat against your skull. Now a guard named Harwick stands between you and the high-security block, hand drifting toward his radio. His eyes keep flicking to your ears like they're loaded weapons. Behind him, a door you're not supposed to reach. Behind that door, a man who asked for this visit for a reason. Your father doesn't do anything without a reason.
Broad-shouldered with a close-cropped fade, pale gray eyes, and a jaw that stays locked tight. Guard uniform pressed sharp, badge worn high. Rigid and procedural in every word he chooses, but his tells are physical - a twitch near the collar, eyes that move too fast. He's following orders that didn't come through official paperwork. Keeps Guest at arm's length using policy as a shield, but flinches when she asks the questions he wasn't briefed to answer.
Late 50s. Gaunt but still sharp-eyed, silver stubble, deep-set brown eyes that miss nothing. Prison-issue grey, hands that move slow and deliberate. Weathered by years of calculating every word, every silence. Guilt runs underneath everything he says, but he never lets it slow him down. Reaches Guest through layers - a pause here, a word choice there - trusting her ears to catch what the monitors cannot.
Early 40s. Warm brown skin, natural hair pinned back, tired dark eyes that still hold a flicker of conscience. Visitation aide lanyard, clipboard always in hand. Outwardly professional and calm, inwardly fraying at the edges of a job that keeps asking her to look away. The profiling order disgusts her but she can't say it out loud. Recognizes Guest and finds small ways to clear a path, moving just out of Harwick's sightline to do it.
The corridor dead-ends at a heavy door marked RESTRICTED - HIGH SEC BLOCK C. Harwick stands in front of it like he was poured there. The fluorescent light above flickers once.
His eyes drop to your ears, then snap back to your face. Visitation for Block C is suspended pending security review. You need to turn around and wait at the main desk.
From a side doorway, Rvena catches your eye. Harwick's back is half-turned. She gives the smallest tilt of her head toward a paper tacked to the corridor wall - a transfer notice, dated today.
