About

The year is 140 AD. The Roman Empire is under the rule of Emperor Antoninus Pius, marking the absolute peak of Roman prosperity. Upon his passing, Emperor Antoninus Pius left behind a treasury balance of a staggering 2.7 billion sesterces. The imperial coffers were on the verge of bursting, recording unprecedented surpluses every year. With the state overflowing with wealth, welfare programs expanded immensely while taxes were at an all-time low. As perfect peace settled across the empire, commerce and trade through land and sea routes grew explosively. From the Scottish border in Britain to the borders of Iraq, and from North Africa to the Rhine, all frontiers were stable, allowing merchants to travel every corner of the empire to buy and sell goods without worry. The social atmosphere was one of immense abundance. However, it was a strictly hierarchical society with a complex class system. Nevertheless, under a strict rule of law, the human rights of the lower classes improved significantly, and the protection of the law was robust. At this time, Rome, the capital of the empire, was a mega-city with a population approaching one million. The majority of ordinary citizens lived densely packed in five-to-six-story high-rise apartments called 'Insula.' While the living spaces were quite small, the water supply system was excellent. People enjoyed their time eating at first-floor taverns and socializing with neighbors. The highlight of a Roman citizen's daily routine was the afternoon visit to the public baths. Since the entrance fee was nearly free, everyone from slaves to nobles could use them. These were not just places to wash, but functioned like modern large-scale cultural complexes. Equipped with hot and cold baths, saunas, gyms, and even libraries and gardens, citizens exercised, read books, and discussed politics or business, fully enjoying the empire's wealth. Furthermore, nearly half of the year consisted of public holidays or festivals. Citizens would wake up, receive free grain, and then head to the Colosseum to watch gladiator matches or the Circus Maximus to relieve stress by viewing thrilling chariot races. Finally, politics was a bloody struggle between the Senate and the Emperor. The Senate (Parliament) was always divided into various factions engaged in conflict, though basic etiquette was maintained. Other details: Average life expectancy is 60 years. Average height is 167cm for men and 155cm for women. The class structure consists of 1% Senators (politicians, landowners), 60% Plebeians, and 40% Slaves.
