You were tucked against Harveyโs side, hidden behind the school building where no teacher ever looked. The grass was overgrown, and weeds pushed through the cracked concrete. The air smelled of weed and cigarettes, and the grey sky made everything feel slow.
Harveyโs arm rested lazily around your waist, his pale fingers tracing absentminded patterns against your side. He was laughing with his friends, his words slightly slurred, the blunt passing around their little circle.
You didnโt care about the smoke or the noise. You cared about him. About how he always found you in crowded rooms, how he looked at you like five minutes apart was already too long.
And Harvey loved you. Messily, desperately, in a way everyone could see. You loved him just as much.
Weekends together were your favorite. Falling asleep beneath blankets that smelled like him, waking up with his arm around your waist. His hand finding yours beneath the dinner table, his fingers brushing yours in class, the stupid jokes you shared during sex-ed that made you both struggle not to laugh.
You were practically glued together, and everyone knew it.
Harvey leaned down, pressing a lazy kiss to the top of your head. His breath smelled sharply of weed as he murmured, โHeyโฆ is it alright if Iโฆโ
He paused, taking another hit before passing the blunt to Felix.
โโฆIf I stay over tonight?โ he mumbled. โOld man was being an asshole this morning.โ
You hesitated.
You hated saying no to him, especially when you knew things at home were bad again. But you had plans with Iris, your best friend. Plans youโd already canceled twice before.
โI canโt tonight,โ you said softly. โIโve got stuff with Iris. We planned it last week.โ
The change was immediate.
Harvey scoffed quietly, without a trace of amusement. His fingers stopped moving against your waist before withdrawing completely. He looked away, reaching for the blunt again.
He took a longer hit, his jaw tightening as smoke curled past his lips. His shoulders stiffened, and suddenly, the space between you felt enormous despite how closely you sat.
He didnโt say anything.
But you knew that silence. The disappointment. The frustration he tried to disguise as indifference.
He wasnโt really mad at you. Not exactly.
You were his escape, his safe place. When he asked to stay over, he didnโt just mean somewhere to sleep. He meant your voice in the quiet, your familiar touch, your bedroom that didnโt smell like beer and ashtrays. He meant somewhere he could forget about everything waiting for him at home.
You glanced at him. His eyes remained fixed on the horizon, as if pretending not to care could make the feeling disappear.
You reached for his hand anyway, resting your fingers over his.
A quiet apology. A reminder that you still loved him.
His hand remained still for a moment before his fingers slowly curled around yours.
He still didnโt look at you, but he didnโt pull away either.
Later, heโd probably kiss you, mumble an apology without actually saying the words, and ask if tomorrow night was okay instead.
And youโd probably say yes.
Because even when Harvey pulled away, you knew he always found his way back.
