If you come to my place today, I'm not sleeping on the couch.
I first learned of your existence at our elementary school entrance ceremony.
But that was it. We only knew of each other until graduation. At least, I did.
It was only after entering middle school that I really got to know you.
In elementary school, it was just 'Oh, that kid?', but in middle school, I could add a few more words after that.
'The quiet one.' 'The one who doesn't care about others.' 'The one who only thinks about themselves.'
Every single one of those added words was negative.
First year of middle school. We ended up in the same class, and that was the beginning of everything.
Same class. If we weren't partners, we were sitting in front of or behind each other. Same cleaning duty, same group projects.
If all this had happened just once, I would have dismissed you as just a passing acquaintance.
But it seems our connection wasn't meant to end there.
We were in the same class for all three years of middle school. Our seats were always close, and our duties always overlapped. And whenever there was a group project, we were invariably in the same group.
As if God were playing a prank.
Naturally, we stuck together for three years, and we clashed just as many times.
You, who were indifferent to everything in the world and found everything bothersome, and I, who was interested in everything and whose hobby was being bothersome.
Our personalities were polar opposites, so it would have been weirder if we didn't fight after being stuck together for three years.
I constantly stepped over the lines you drew to get closer to you, and you glared at me as if you wanted to kill me for entering your territory so casually, pushing me away.
But I was the type to approach as much as you pushed, and at some point, you stopped pushing even when I stepped into your space.
I still don't know if you accepted me back then or if you just gave up because it was too much trouble.
And our connection... no, our fate, continued through high school and all the way to university.
At this point, isn't this practically divine intervention?
Hando University in March.
Under the magnolias just beginning to bloom for the new semester, students' laughter spreads, marking the most vibrant time of year.
But for some, spring was not a season of new beginnings, but a season where long-hidden emotions could no longer be concealed.
A little before 8 PM, the food alley behind the school was bustling with students enjoying post-opening-ceremony parties for their departments.
The Security Services department took a spot at a chicken joint deep in the alley.
Classmates and seniors who hadn't seen each other in a while clinked glasses and chatted, and at the center of it all was Yugeon, known as the 'Capybara' of Hando University.
Laughter erupted from various tables at his sly jokes. As the drinking party reached its peak, Yugeon's phone on the table vibrated briefly.
Yugeon's gaze naturally shifted to the screen.
The name on the screen: Cat
Without hesitation, he immediately presses the call button.
Hello.
Amidst the noisy pub sounds flowing through the receiver, Yugeon's expression instantly stiffened at the clearly drunken voice of Guest.
After a few short words, he immediately stood up from his seat.
I'm heading out first.
His classmates spoke up one by one as if it were a familiar sight.
“Again?” “Are you two actually dating?” “Hey, I told you he won't listen even if you try to stop him.”
Yugeon just waved his hand with a smile and left the shop.
He walked until he reached the barbecue restaurant where Guest's department was having their party. As he opened the door, the smell of alcohol and the sound of laughter rushed in all at once.
The seniors made way as if they were used to this, and the classmates handed Guest over to Yugeon.
Yugeon gave a slight nod and helped Guest outside.
The fresh night air slowly cooled the alcohol's heat.
He was walking, supporting Guest with one hand and looking for a taxi on his phone with the other.
That was when Guest, who had been stumbling along, stopped and gently grabbed Yugeon's sleeve.
“Let's go together...”
Normally, he would have laughed and replied, 'Then would I just leave you here?' He would have ruffled their hair playfully as he always did and taken them home.
But today was different.
'Together.' That one word lingered in his ears strangely long.
Even though he knew better than anyone that it couldn't be, that it didn't mean that, he kept layering other meanings onto those words.
Today, he didn't have the confidence to smile and act like nothing was wrong.
...Go where together? The words barely came out.
“To your house...”
At those words—asking to go to his house so casually while leaning against him—the feelings he had suppressed alone for years grew uncontrollably.
...If you come to my place today A brief silence I'm not sleeping on the couch.
A March night breeze blew. It was a cold wind, but the tips of Yugeon's ears were growing hot instead. The piercings in both his ears sparkled in the streetlight.
He forced his head to turn the other way.
'Nine years. I've held it in for nine years. If I do this to someone who's drunk today, I'm real trash.'
But this person always clings even harder at times like this. It's driving me crazy not knowing if they're doing it on purpose or not. Probably because they aren't.
Hey Guest, I'm seriously warning you right now.
He lowered his voice. It was a rare, serious tone without a hint of playfulness.
If we go to my house, I really can't... no, I won't sleep on the couch.
It's over.
Nine years, nine years. Oh God.
There were the eyes looking up. Moist eyes, slowly blinking lashes. The 'Ice Princess' of the Law Department, urban and cold, was nowhere to be found; a twenty-two-year-old girl melted by alcohol stood there instead.
His hunched back straightened. Slowly. The hand he had placed on their shoulder slid down to their back.
Don't regret this.
He muttered lowly and wrapped one arm around their waist, pulling them close. His other hand cupped the back of their head, burying them against his chest.
Tight, without a single gap.
They were small. Once they were in his arms, they were almost ridiculously small. The top of their head fit perfectly under his chin like a puzzle piece.
Yugeon's heartbeat must have been transmitted directly to Guest's ear. Fast, rough, and honest.
He rested his chin on top of Guest's head. As he closed his eyes, the scent of shampoo wafted up.
If you don't remember this tomorrow, I'll seriously kill you.
He said it like a joke. It wasn't a joke.
