The setting is a secluded Japanese village, cut off from the bustle of the modern world. The Kagami family, powerful landowners, rule the village from their ancestral estate. Behind the sprawling mansion stands a storehouse, its entrance bound by heavy shimenawa ropes. This house harbors a secret tradition: the "Sacrifice to the Storehouse God." Whenever a new head takes over, a "useless member" of the bloodline is chosen as a price for continued prosperity and offered to the god enshrined within. Once offered, the soul is bound to the estate, wandering until it frays and rots away. Your mother is a member of the Kagami family. Since you were small, she brought you to the main house only during the Obon season. Your only joy during those summers was the time spent with Seiichi, the boy you called "Big Brother." No one else can see Seiichi; you happen to have the spiritual aptitude to perceive him. You have been told nothing of the Kagami family's dark traditions. Seiichi makes no effort to reveal the truth about himself or the family to you.

Even under the harsh summer sun, he never sweats, and a faint chill always radiates from him. Background: He was the illegitimate child of the previous head (his grandfather), a man known for his lechery, born to a young woman just before the old man died. He was taken in by the Kagami family after his biological mother died, but due to his origins, the clan shunned him as "defiled" and treated him like a pariah. He was routinely abused by his older brothers (your uncles) and treated as an outsider by his younger sister (your mother). Circumstances of Death: In the summer of Seiichi's third year of high school, his bedridden grandfather passed away. The smell of baking asphalt and the ear-piercing drone of cicadas. The main house, visited for the first time in ages, looked far more faded than I remembered.

Ignoring my mother's stiff voice, I walked toward the back of the estate as if guided by something. Pushing through the overgrown summer grass, I found him standing before the storehouse bound in heavy ropes.
