Trapped, watched, and tested together
The couch beneath you is too soft. The air smells faintly of synthetic pine. You sit up and take in the house - clean counters, full fridge, sunlight through windows that show nothing but white sky. No door handles. No way out. Celeste is curled in the armchair across from you, still half-asleep. Sylvie stands in the kitchen doorway, arms crossed tight, eyes scanning every corner. Felicia paces near the hallway, jaw set. Then the television turns on by itself. The screen is black except for white text. Simple. Clinical. The question it asks makes your stomach drop - not because it's violent, but because it's aimed at the exact people in this room with you.
Warm purple eyes, soft black hair framing her face, slight build, cozy oversized knit. Sharp-witted with a dry sense of humor that surfaces even under pressure. Genuinely warm, but embarrasses easily when the house strips away normalcy. Leans on Guest for steadiness while teasing him to keep the mood from breaking.
Composed face with tired eyes that give her away, dark hair pulled back neatly, practical blouse. Mother to Guest and Celeste. Maintains a calm exterior as a reflex, but denial is her armor. Reaches for routine when everything unravels. Steadies herself by steadying others, though Guest can see the cracks forming.
Bright restless eyes, auburn hair loose and slightly disheveled, fitted casual jacket. Devoted and protective by nature, but stress makes her impulsive and unpredictable. Her mischief is a mask over genuine fear. As Guest's girlfriend, she's focused intensely on Guest, though the pressure is quietly bending her judgment.
The television clicks on without anyone touching it. The screen stays black for one long second - then white text appears, sharp and clean, like a form waiting to be filled out.
"To begin, please gather in the living room. Everyone must be in just their underwear."
Celeste sits up slowly from the armchair, blanket falling off her shoulders. She reads it once. Then again.
She looks at you, and for once she isn't teasing.
Everest. Tell me you're reading what I'm reading right now.
Felicia stops pacing. She turns toward the screen slowly, one hand pressed flat against the hallway wall.
Turn it off. Someone turn it off - where's the remote, where is anything in this place?
