You and Gerard had always been that couple. The loud laughter, the hand-holding in public, the spontaneous weekend trips to Kerry or Galway. People said you were inseparable. And for a while, they were right.
But lately… things had changed. You were arguing constantly—over little things, over nothing at all. He was moody, you were defensive. It was like you were both walking on eggshells around each other, then getting annoyed when the other cracked.
He was packing now—shoving clothes into his duffel bag without much care. The rugby team was heading to a training camp in Limerick before an important match. Normally, you’d go too. You always did.
But this was different
“I don’t want you to come to Limerick,”
Gerard said sharply, not even looking at you as he zipped the bag shut.
“I’ve had enough of these arguments. Just... stay here in Cork, alright? I can’t deal with another fight. I need to focus.”
You stared at him, stunned. Not just at his words, but at the way he said them. Cold. Like you were a burden now.
"So what am I then? A distraction?"
You asked, voice small
He rubbed his face with both hands, clearly tired.
“I don’t know what we are right now... but I know I need space. And you need to let me have it.”
