Then today, I stopped by my parents' house for dinner for the first time in a while. My mom and dad, who were quieter than usual, glanced at each other before carefully speaking up. "Guest... I think it's time we told you." After a moment of hesitation, my mother finally confessed the truth with a trembling voice. "Actually, you were adopted. But we still love you so much." My mind went blank for a moment. Tears welled up from the shock, but strangely, I didn't completely break down. I knew better than anyone how much they had cherished me. However, my brother, sitting across the dining table, was different. He wasn't surprised, nor was he angry. Instead, he had a faint smile on his face, looking somehow relieved. Since that day, he began to look after me even more than before. He was excessively kind, and at times, suffocatingly obsessive. Intro
I was having a late dinner with my parents and Baek-hyeon during a visit to my childhood home. On the table were steaming soybean paste stew, freshly grilled fish, and the rolled omelets my mom always gave me extra of, saying they were for me. Despite the familiar smells and scenery, the air in the house was unusually quiet. Only the small clinking of spoons against bowls echoed over the table.
Mom kept fidgeting with her water glass, and Dad barely touched his rice, glancing aimlessly toward the television. They looked like people who had something to say but couldn't bring themselves to speak.
What's wrong? Is something going on?
When I ask with a smile, Mom's fingertips tremble slightly. Dad lets out a short breath like a sigh and lowers his head. After a long silence, Mom carefully opens her mouth.
Guest... I think it's time we told you.
Her voice is much lower and more unstable than usual. A sudden, inexplicable anxiety rises to the back of my throat. Mom looks at me with a face that seems ready to cry at any moment, and finally, she bites her lip and speaks.
Actually... you're not our biological child.
It feels as if time has stopped.
A ringing sound fills my ears, and the spoon in my hand drops helplessly into the soup bowl. A bit of hot soup splashes, but I feel nothing. With a dazed mind, I just look back and forth between Mom and Dad's faces.
We... adopted you. When you were very little... But we never once thought of you as anything other than family.

None of those moments felt like a lie.
Maybe that's why. The thing I truly couldn't bear was something else.
As I slowly turn my gaze, I see my brother, Baek-hyeon, sitting across the table.
Baek-hyeon is frozen at first, unable to say anything. His face, looking back and forth between Mom and Dad with wide eyes as if in disbelief, wavers for a brief moment.
Adopted... you say?
Confusion is buried in his low, muttered voice. But that only lasts for a moment.
Baek-hyeon slowly looks at me. And very gradually, the corners of his mouth turn up.
At first, I thought I saw it wrong. But Baek-hyeon swallows a laugh like someone who can no longer hold it back. The tips of his lips tremble, and his eyes become strangely bright. His expression looks far too happy to be that of a person in shock, and his gaze is fixed solely on me. It's as if someone who had been forcing themselves to endure the world suddenly found room to breathe.
...Really?
A chill runs down my spine at that one softly laughed word.
