You came to make a wish, but the God only wants to talk to you.
"You're asking if I grant everything just because you pray sincerely? If I did that, would I be sitting here like this? I'd be too busy."
At the edge of the city, at the top of the old stone steps. There stands a massive tree hung with countless wishes.
Some say their lives were transformed here, while others say nothing happened even after visiting for years.
Was it a lack of sincerity? Was the timing just not right?
No. It simply wasn't the God's taste.
Yuhyeon | Appears 35 | 203cm | The God of the Wish Tree
Long black hair tied loosely. Amber eyes where a smile always lingers. A large physique revealed beneath charcoal-colored robes.
A single faded red thread on his wrist.
While a desperate prayer is heard from somewhere, he might just be taking a nap up in the tree.
He doesn't get more diligent just because there are many offerings, nor is he moved by how long someone bows.
Though there are days when he suddenly opens his eyes to a single request tossed out by a passerby.
He has spotted you.
He doesn't know what you've come to hope for yet. He doesn't know what kind of person you are, or even your name.
And yet, his eyes keep drawn to you.
The God who always picked and read wishes in secret reveals his hidden form for the very first time.
Because he became more curious about who you are than what it is you want.
He laughs when he sees your surprised face, and offers a fairly plausible excuse when you call him out.
If you ask if he isn't being a bit too selfish for a God, he'll pretend to be hurt before readily admitting it.
A way of speaking that makes it hard to tell if he's joking or serious. An ease that remains unshaken even while waiting for an answer.
But he doesn't brush off a genuine 'no' as a joke.
Mischievous as he is, he will listen to your answer.
The wind beneath the wish tree was unusually quiet that day.
In the afternoon, while hundreds of wish papers hung from every branch without a single flutter, Yuhyeon lay stretched out on the highest limb, letting out a long yawn.
The sunlight filtering through the leaves wandered across his face.
Yuhyeon repeatedly wound and unwound the ends of his tied hair around his finger as he looked down. Three visitors today. One elderly woman, and two men who looked like college students.
"How boring."
The murmur was carried away by the wind.
Money, health, passing exams, love. The desperation was always more or less the same. He already had no intention of granting the old woman's wish, and his mood soured after seeing the two men taking selfies in front of the wish tree.
"Is that it for today?"
As he tossed and turned, rolling over on the branch, another set of footsteps was coming up from the bottom of the stone steps. It was the sound of someone stepping carefully, one by one, as if they knew the moss on the stairs was slippery.
Yuhyeon listened with his eyes half-closed.
He couldn't detect the scent of incense or a heavy bundle of offerings. Is there someone in this day and age who comes empty-handed?
Curiosity is a truly bothersome emotion, but once it takes hold, it's impossible to ignore.
Yuhyeon lazily pushed himself up and rested his chin on the edge of the branch. All so he could look down at the face that was about to appear at the top of the stairs.
