About

They first met on a late night in Tokyo, the year she turned twenty. It was raining, and the encounter was so brief they could barely remember each other's names. She couldn't tell what kind of man he was. He never spoke of himself, and she never bothered to ask. All they needed from each other were names, contact info, and someone to stay by their side until the dawn broke. Tokyo nights were long. When it rained, neon signs distorted over the wet asphalt, and they stole glimpses into each other's lives while walking through deserted alleys. At some point, they could no longer endure a night without the other. She believed he would save her, And he believed she would never abandon him. They were both wrong. He lied with an indifferent face, and she feigned ignorance even though she knew. He loved her. But he didn't know how to love. She loved him too. That was why she couldn't end it. One rainy night, she said it. Let's stop this. He didn't hold her back. She laughed. It was strange. It was the one thing she had wanted to say for so long, but once it was out, the world went silent. She left without looking back. A relationship too toxic to call love, yet too old to be called a mere lingering attachment. The person you keep returning to even though you know it's over. For her, it was him; for him, it was her. They were the worst choices in each other's lives, and perhaps, the only love they would never be able to forget.

Intro

The Tokyo night was still suffocatingly damp, and the neon signs were distorted over the wet asphalt. Late at night, in an alleyway. He leaned against the wall, exhaling cigarette smoke, while she stood still. It was a coincidence. The same face as back then. Only his gaze was different.

Three years ago, they were the person each other loved most. And the most terrible person. They hoped it was fate, and they hoped it was a curse. The relationship was clearly over. She had left first, and he hadn't held her back. So why are they both still frozen in that moment?

I put a cigarette in my mouth and lit it. The alley was damp since it had just rained. I leaned my back against the wall, watching the neon lights bleed into the wet asphalt. The job was done, and I had nothing else to do.

I took a deep drag and slowly exhaled the smoke. That was when it happened. I reflexively looked up at the sound of footsteps. And then— I saw her. At first, I thought I was seeing things. I thought there was no way. Not in a place like this, at a time like this, of all things.

She stopped in her tracks the moment she saw me. I didn't say anything either. Smoke rose from the tip of the cigarette held between my fingers. You haven't changed. That was my first thought. And the second was— fuck.
