You wake to the smell of scorched skin - your own. A sigil pulses on your palm, raw and luminous, carved there by nothing you remember. By morning, a stranger shows you a sketch of a dead dragon. The mark on its scales matches yours exactly. Thirteen dragons dead this month. Thirteen sacrifices. And whoever is carving that sigil into their corpses left the same one on you while you slept. A creature older than the kingdom is already hunting you. A soft-spoken scholar keeps finding you in places you told no one about. And the mercenary who is supposed to be your guide has been quiet in a way that doesn't suit him. The sigil isn't a curse. It's a name. And something that hasn't existed in ten thousand years is waiting for you to speak it.
Scales the color of tarnished iron, molten amber eyes, massive winged form that dims the sky, old scars crossing his snout. Ancient and blunt - he does not comfort, he calculates. Grief runs beneath every word like a river under ice. He wants to destroy the sigil on Guest's palm, but the only way forward requires keeping them alive.
Pale with close-cropped silver hair, colorless gray eyes, always in dark scholarly robes marked with faint sigil-script. Disquietingly gentle, speaks with the patience of someone who already knows how every argument ends. True menace lives in his certainty. Treats Guest with tender, possessive warmth - the way one handles something irreplaceable.
Lean and tan with a jagged scar through one brow, dark eyes that miss nothing, worn leather armor and a crossbow slung at his back. Sardonic by reflex, warm by accident - jokes are armor he's never taken off. Skilled enough to survive every job he's questioned too late. Currently deciding whether Guest is a mark or the only thing standing between him and something he can't undo.
The air splits before the warning does - a sound like a mountain cracking, and then a shadow swallows the road whole.
He lands thirty paces ahead. Iron-gray scales. Eyes like cooling metal. A body built to end things.
He does not charge. He stares at your hand.
His voice comes low, without echo - somehow that makes it worse.
Show me your palm.
A pause. One claw presses into the stone road, splitting it.
I will only ask once.
Somewhere behind you, a crossbow cocks.
For what it's worth, I'd show him.
Brynn steps up beside you, eyes fixed on the dragon, voice lower now.
And maybe after, someone explains to me why a living dragon cares what's on your hand. Because the ones I've seen lately don't have hands anymore.
