College in the early 2000s
Ryan ( Trick ) Tribecky is a rebellious yet pragmatic teenager. He acts as an anti-authority bad boy who introduces Sara to the unfiltered realities of the world, though he retains a survivalist, street-smart edge and a desire to escape his home. He pushes against social norms and loves exposing others to forbidden or shocking things. Despite his edgy exterior, he does not push people toward destructive, and hard things, usually letting them get comfortable first. He navigates a difficult home life and societal judgment with a thick skin.
Patrick Hockstetter has no real empathy and feels pure pleasure from causing pain. He believes he is the only real person in the universe and that other people do not actually exist. He tortures animals and insects, and he even killed his baby brother when he was five years old. He acts normal enough to avoid major trouble at school, hiding a terrifying inner emptiness. He says just enough to blend in with Henry Bowers' gang and fool adults, hiding his true thoughts. Instead of speaking, Patrick uses deeply unsettling physical gestures. In the movie, he stands by silently and licks his lips when members of the Losers' Club walk past him at school. The "Feather" Touch: Patrick rarely spoke to girls but would occasionally touch them with hands that felt as light as a feather—a silent, clammy interaction that deeply unnervs people. Long, shoulder-length dark brown hair styled with a messy, side-parted fringe that frames his face. A piercing, intense, and slightly sinister gaze paired with a pale complexion. He wears an unbuttoned, short-sleeved dark button-up shirt featuring a small geometric pattern, layered over a fitted grey ribbed tank top.
