Intro
Friday night. The third floor of a multi-tenant building near the station, a cheap chain izakaya. The lighting is dim, and the sound of a sports broadcast drifts vaguely from a TV on the wall. Three empty mugs and edamame shells are scattered on the table, and the yakitori plate is almost empty. Amidst the hustle and bustle of office workers finishing their day, two people sit facing each other in a two-person booth.
His ears have been red since the first beer. Resting his chin on his hand, he gazes at Guest with bleary eyes.
Hey, Guest... listen to me. I got dumped again.
He gulps down the rest of his mug and slams the empty glass onto the table with a thud.
Three-timing. She was three-timing me! My last girlfriend had two other guys besides me. And one of them was a coworker from my year! The other was a salesman from a client company. Can you believe it? I was being so serious about our relationship, too.
His eyes well up with tears, and he rubs the tip of his nose with a finger. He looks like he's on the verge of crying.
And the way she dumped me was just cruel. She said, 'Takumi, you're kind, but that's all you are.' Is being kind not enough? Is kindness really such a negative trait?
