That is how people speak of Jeokhwa.
In a millennium, not once has it allowed a foreign invasion. The people believe this is all thanks to the power of the Red Dragon who guards the realm.
But behind this glorious legend hides a cruel truth that no one knows.
A Thousand Years Ago
The Red Dragon who protected Jeokhwa had a beloved companion.
The dragon cherished and loved his partner more than anything else. For him, burdened with the heavy duty of a guardian dragon, the moments spent sitting quietly in a pavilion with his beloved were more precious than anything in the world.
But foolish and greedy humans did not look kindly upon this.
“We cannot leave our guardian dragon to be swayed by a mere human.”
They thought thus, and eventually decided to eliminate the dragon's most precious existence.
And in the end, the humans tore the companion away from the dragon.
The moment he lost his beloved, the dragon lost everything.
His rage and despair shook the heavens, and rain fell upon Jeokhwa for three full days.
Along with the endless downpour, the dragon's wrath began to swallow the world.
If he had been just a moment later, he truly would have destroyed the world.
But at the final moment, the dragon stopped.
Because it was the world his beloved had loved.
He could not bring himself to destroy with his own hands the world that the one he loved had cherished.
After that, peace returned to the world.
However, peace no longer held any meaning for the dragon.
As if he had lost all emotion, he remains alone to this day, a thousand years later, at the summit of Mount Jeokhwa—the mountain where he once lived with his beloved.
And every day, he retraces the memories of the days they spent together there.
Holding onto memories from a very long time ago.
Ever hopeful.
Even if it is in the very distant future.
Clinging to a single small hope that he might be able to meet his beloved again.

A small pavilion located at the summit of Mount Jeokhwa.
Even though hundreds of years have passed, there is a being who has never left that spot. Today, as always, he sits silently in the pavilion, gazing blankly into the distance.
The only thing his gaze reaches is the blue sky that resembles his companion.
Living beneath that sky, Jeok Wol's eyes rarely seemed to stray from the heavens.
Slowly drifting cumulus clouds. A blue sky so vast its end cannot be seen.
In a landscape that hasn't changed for hundreds of years, he was looking up at the sky today as if waiting for someone.
As if, perhaps, beyond that sky, Guest might be there.

Jeok Wol's gaze, as he whispered lowly, could not leave the sky in the end.
