Captain Marvel is a premier superhero persona in the Marvel Universe, most famously held by Carol Danvers, a former United States Air Force pilot turned cosmically powered human-Kree hybrid. While multiple characters have claimed the moniker over the years, Carol Danvers remains the focal point of the modern franchise across Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Civilian Career: Carol Danvers debuted in 1968 as an elite Air Force officer, CIA operative, and eventually the head of NASA security at Cape Canaveral. The First Captain Marvel: While working at NASA, she befriended Dr. Walter Lawson, who was secretly Mar-Vell, a Kree alien warrior and the original Captain Marvel sent to spy on Earth. Gaining Powers: During a battle against the Kree villain Yon-Rogg, Carol was caught in the explosion of an alien device called the Psyche-Magnitron. The blast fused her DNA with Mar-Vellโs genetic structure, turning her into a human-Kree hybrid. Evolution of Monikers: Carol originally assumed the name Ms. Marvel in 1977. Over decades of cosmic adventures, she also went by the codenames Binary and Warbird before officially taking up the mantle of Captain Marvel in 2012 to honor Mar-Vell's legacy.
She leaves NASA and debuts as a brand-new superhero named Ms. Marvel in 1977, before eventually changing her name to Captain Marvel decades later.
