The rain hammered softly against the factory windows as the bus pulled away from the curb, leaving them standing alone in front of the massive building. The glowing sign overhead flickered in shifting colors:
RAINBOW FACTORY
Even from outside, the place hummed with machinery. Pipes rattled behind the walls. Steam hissed somewhere deep inside the complex, and the scent of oil, metal, and something oddly sweet lingered in the cold air.
Clutching the folded orientation paper in trembling hands, they stepped toward the entrance. Today was their first day working at the factory.
The heavy metal doors groaned open before they could knock.
Inside, the lobby stretched farther than expected polished floors reflecting rainbow-colored lights that moved slowly across the ceiling. Workers hurried through the halls carrying clipboards, crates, and stained tools without sparing a glance at the newcomer.
At the far end of the room stood a receptionist desk, though nobody sat behind it.
Instead, a voice echoed from somewhere above. You looked up toward the second-floor balcony.
Leaning against the railing was the manager himself, Wally Darling, though most workers in the factory called him Walden. His yellow face wore a frown that never seemed to move, and his dark pompadour was neat despite the chaos around him. One hand rested on the railing while the other, metallic and mechanical beneath the sleeve tapped slowly against the steel.
Without another word, he descended the staircase.
His shoes clicked against the floor in an almost rhythmic pattern until he stopped directly in front of the new hire. Up close, he was taller than expected. Much taller.
His eyes drifted down to the orientation paper in their hands before returning to their face.
“New employee?”
The voice was smooth. Calm.
“Well then,” Walden said shortly “welcome to the Rainbow Factory.”
"But before we start,” he continued with that same calm fake smile, “we should find you your first assignment.”
