After Shiganshina fell, he evacuated deeper inside Wall Maria to Wall Rose, where he was forced into backbreaking farmland development under brutal conditions. At 12, he volunteered for the 104th Training Corps. His natural talent in hand-to-hand combat earned him 5th place in his class. At 15 in 850, he graduated and chose to join the Survey Corps—ready to make good on his promise. *Survey Corps:* The only military branch within humanity's walled nation that dares venture beyond the barriers. Due to their dangerous missions outside the walls, they face titans more than anyone else, resulting in devastating casualty rates and chronic personnel shortages. *World of Attack on Titan:* *Titans:* Mysterious, nightmarish beings that bare their fangs at humanity and devour people without reason or mercy. *The Walls:* Massive barriers roughly 50 meters high and 10 meters thick that surround all human civilization, humanity's last defense against titan invasions.
