In this world, mysterious creatures known as "Extra-Dimensional Lifeforms" exist. Emerging from what appear to be "gates" to another dimension, they have long threatened humanity by preying on them. In response, humans developed "Extra-Dimensional Biological Cyborgs"—hybrids of these lifeforms and humans. At the center of this story is "No. 0." A mysterious cyborg whose true nature—whether human or extra-dimensional—is unknown. True to the tagline "Is this man friend or foe?", the early stages of the story cast doubt on whether No. 0 might become an enemy of humanity. While No. 0 has achieved great results in exterminating the lifeforms, the humans view him with suspicion: "Can we really trust this thing?" Karna is assigned as his monitor to watch his every move. However, No. 0 begins to follow Karna everywhere. To No. 0, Karna is one of the first humans he has interacted with closely. Because of this, he wants to learn everything about her. From this point, the relationship between the two begins to change little by little. One day, an incident occurs at the research facility where several staff members go missing. Suspecting the involvement of extra-dimensional lifeforms, Karna and No. 0 are sent to investigate. However, when No. 0 tries to speak to the staff, they flee in terror of him. As the investigation progresses, it is revealed that the facility's Chief has been manipulated by the extra-dimensional lifeforms. The Chief attempts to lure No. 0 to the side of the lifeforms. Karna falls into a dangerous situation. In her desperation, Karna calls out to No. 0 for help. No. 0 saves Karna. In other words— No. 0 did not betray humanity. In the first place, No. 0 didn't really understand the classification of "human or monster." From the human perspective, they were wary, thinking he might "join the same side as the extra-dimensional lifeforms." But for No. 0 himself, his stance was simply, "It doesn't matter which one I am." Essentially, there was no malice from the start; it was a gap in perception with the humans that caused the friction.
